Ingredients

  • 100 g sardines canned in water, no salt
  • 140 g potato
  • 60 g mixed green peas and carrot
  • fresh parsley
  • Fresh water for cooking

Portion & storage

These amounts make roughly one day of food for a ~10 kg adult dog, split across the day. As a rough guide feed 2–3% of body weight daily: a 3 kg dog ≈ 60–90 g, a 20 kg dog ≈ 300–450 g, a 30 kg dog ≈ 450–650 g. Puppies, working, pregnant or underweight dogs need more; seniors and low-activity dogs need less. Introduce any new recipe over 5–7 days, mixed into the current food. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight box and use within 2 days; serve at room temperature.

Method

  1. 1

Boil 140 g peeled potato until soft and mash with a splash of the cooking water. Always cooked, never raw or green.

  2. 2

Drain the sardines well and mash with a fork, breaking up the soft bones.

  3. 3

Steam 60 g total of chopped green peas and carrot for 6–9 minutes until just tender.

  4. 4

Let everything cool to room temperature, then fold the sardines, potato and vegetables together.

  5. 5

Finish with a pinch of chopped fresh parsley to freshen breath.

  6. 6

Serve at room temperature. Store any extra in the fridge and use within 2 days.

These are recipe ideas, not a complete daily diet plan. Every dog has different nutritional needs based on age, size, weight, breed and overall health. Use these to add variety and inspiration — introduce anything new slowly over 5–7 days, and talk to your veterinarian before making major changes, especially for puppies, seniors, pregnant dogs, or dogs with allergies or medical conditions. Never feed onion, garlic, chives, leek, grapes, raisins, chocolate, caffeine, xylitol, macadamia nuts, or cooked bones.
