Ingredients

  • 100 g lean boneless mutton
  • 80 g pearl barley (dry weight)
  • 60 g mixed carrot and bottle gourd (lauki)
  • bone broth
  • Fresh water for cooking

Portion & storage

These amounts make roughly one day of food for a ~10 kg adult dog, split across the day. As a rough guide feed 2–3% of body weight daily: a 3 kg dog ≈ 60–90 g, a 20 kg dog ≈ 300–450 g, a 30 kg dog ≈ 450–650 g. Puppies, working, pregnant or underweight dogs need more; seniors and low-activity dogs need less. Introduce any new recipe over 5–7 days, mixed into the current food. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight box and use within 2 days; serve at room temperature.

Method

  1. 1

Simmer 80 g pearl barley in 260 ml water for about 30 minutes until tender.

  2. 2

Simmer the mutton in water for 40–45 minutes until very tender, then chop small and skim off the fat.

  3. 3

Steam 60 g total of chopped carrot and bottle gourd (lauki) for 6–9 minutes until just tender.

  4. 4

Let everything cool to room temperature, then fold the lean mutton, pearl barley and vegetables together.

  5. 5

Moisten with 2 tbsp unsalted bone or vegetable broth.

  6. 6

Serve at room temperature. Store any extra in the fridge and use within 2 days.

These are recipe ideas, not a complete daily diet plan. Every dog has different nutritional needs based on age, size, weight, breed and overall health. Use these to add variety and inspiration — introduce anything new slowly over 5–7 days, and talk to your veterinarian before making major changes, especially for puppies, seniors, pregnant dogs, or dogs with allergies or medical conditions. Never feed onion, garlic, chives, leek, grapes, raisins, chocolate, caffeine, xylitol, macadamia nuts, or cooked bones.
